A new year is under way and we would like to welcome back all returning members of DFSC. A special welcome goes out to the new members of the club; we are happy to have you! For those who have not renewed your membership, USFS membership year starts July 1. If you need a new form, please visit the membership page at www.denverfsc.org and send the completed form in quickly.
The board has been busy getting the year under way! Pirates Cove night is just around the corner, then it will be Southwesterns exhibitions, a Social Dance and the Holiday Ice Show. The Junior Board is busy working on their first task - an apparel order with the new logo.
We are all excited for this upcoming year! Please keep an eye out for upcoming events and we always ask to give back a little time and volunteer at club sponsored activities. Without everyone, we could not support our members.

Performing Your Best When it Counts
|
Performing well in competition in figure skating can be daunting because you have so few competitions. Many of you will skate in only half a dozen competitions in your skating season.
You'll spend hours of practice time honing your skills and program. But unless you some special things, all you're doing is becoming very good at practicing!
We've talked about how important it is to do program run-through's several times a week now that you're in the competitive season. Here are some ideas for making them feel more like you're in a real competition and helping you develop a competitive mindset. 1. Take advantage of all the exhibitions you can. 2. Invite your friends and relatives to watch you skate regularly, not just at competitions. Perform for them. 3. Once a week, have your coach score your program run-through. 4. Once a week, perform against your skating friends - score and critique each others' performances. 5. Compete against yourself. Identify a prize you'll treat yourself to if you meet your competitive goals. An example would be accumulating points for landing your jumps and subtracting points for touches and falls. Count your basic jumps one point each, your Axel and Lutz two points each. If you have six jumps total, you can accumulate a maximum of eight points. Set a point total goal for yourself and see if you can achieve it.
Remember, competing is very different from practicing. To become a great competitor, you must spend lots of time in what's sometimes known as the competitive cauldron.

Technical Corner
|
This is a new section that will help communication of Technical Notifications to our skaters and coaches. Recently, the ISU Congress made changes in which USFS has adopted.
Click on the following link for the official notification regarding Junior and Senior Short and Free Skating (#28) events as well as Junior and Senior Pair Short and Free Skating events (#29). http://www.usfigureskating.org/New_Judging.asp?id=311
On July 1 and 2, coaches conference calls were held to discuss the recent ISU changes. The link below will take you to the official notes from the singles/pairs and dance calls. As you read these notes, we ask you to understand that the questions that were brought up on the calls were answered to the best of our ability with the resources we presently have.
Diligence has been given to the answers provided; however, at times, interpretations may vary, even between members of the Technical Committee. Where this happens, we will do our best to seek out further clarification.

The requirements for No Test through Pre-Juvenile Free Skating has been updated. Please see Technical Notification #30.
For dancers, please refer to technical notifications #31 regarding twizzles and lifts in Juvenile and Intermediate Free Dance; and #32 for the twizzle element in Adult Free Dance.
Upcoming changes to the U.S. Figure Skating Pairs Tests Structure On Sept. 2, 2008, the U.S. Figure Skating preliminary pairs test will be removed from the test structure and rulebook and the pre-juvenile pairs test will be added. Anyone who passed the preliminary pairs test before Sept. 2, 2008, will automatically be grandfathered into the pre-juvenile level and will not need to take the pre-juvenile pairs test. As such, skaters who have passed the preliminary pairs test and no other pairs tests will be eligible to compete at the pre-juvenile pairs level and take their juvenile pairs test when the rule change goes into effect on Sept. 2. Nonqualifying competitions can still hold preliminary pairs events, and preliminary pairs tests can still be taken up until the rule change goes into effect on Sept. 2.

Coaches Registration Steps
|
This year, coaches that have skaters testing at a USFS test session or competing at a USFS sanctioned event must have insurance, be registered with USFS and complete a successful (green light) background check.
Costs - DFSC covers their registration cost with US Figure Skating. USFS requires coaches to go through a background check for which you must pay.
Insurance - Ensure that your insurance is renewed as this is a validation step in the background check.
Steps - Log into your account at USFS by clicking the Members Only link on the right-hand side of the front page. After login, there is a Coaches Registration link on the left-hand menu.
Time Frame - It could take 2-4 weeks for completion. If you have a student competing at Southwesterns, please start this process immediately. The LOC has been instructed to not allow you to be credentialed at Southwesterns if the process has not been completed successfully.
